I smile and nod
Acceptingly
While inside my mind goes blank
And my heart begins to burn
I say “It’s okay”
To reassure you
A lie, hidden
Behind a veil of light

You fly on
Sail away into the sky
And I smile and wave
As I die inside

I chased the wandering star
Through misty mountain peaks
And every time I got close
It flitted away
You scorched my hands
When I reached for you
You burned my tongue
When I tried to speak the words that would free my heart

Finally I ended my quest
Discouraged
                        Accepting
Doing ads you wished
And my heart fell a little
For that star flew in my sky
The brightest I had ever seen
And yet I knew, twas not my quest
I would hound you no longer

Then, lo, the star came down to me
And you took my hand in yours
And shone more brightly in my eyes
And for that brief, brief moment
      My heart
                        SOARED

Then I blinked
And the star scorched me once again
Burned me, hotter than ever before
And sailed away, screamed back to the sky
As I fell to the ground in pain
Now you fly far beyond my reach
I can barely hear your song
That love which so thrilled me, now condemns me
And my heart is not as strong

The sweetest fruit is the one denied
And for one brief moment, I had it all
Then your fire flared
And drove away
The moonlit, starry night

The truest desire, ran away
The man who wrote
            That ‘tis better to have loved and lost’
                         Has never felt fallen love’s burn

And the star asks the impossible
As it fades into the mist
“Promise me, not to wait
To forget those three days that we had”
       Three days for you
                           An eternity for me
How can I forget
              The light that shone so strong
That could have burned away the dark places
                Locked deepest inside my heart
But now, the darkness rises
Stronger than before
And as the star draws away
Its illumination turns to ice

The memory of those days
Is a burning flame in my mind, my heart
Star-fire, star woven
Memories hard to depart

Perhaps in the future
We shall try again
For now, I fly solo
With you as my friend

But there is something
The star must accept
I can move on
But I can never forget.
